Isa, also known as Jesus in the Christian tradition, holds a particular place among the prophets of Islam. His story fascinates Muslims the world over through his miraculous birth and his profound teaching. Isa's mother, Maryam, was a devout woman chosen by Allah to bear this exceptional messenger.
The Quran tells how Isa was born without a father, by the divine will alone. From his earliest days he showed extraordinary signs of his prophetic mission. He spoke to the people from his cradle to defend his mother's honour. Those first miracles already pointed to the greatness of his future mission.
The miracles of Isa included healing the blind and the leper, and raising the dead by Allah's leave. He shaped birds of clay that came to life when he breathed on them. These wonders served to confirm his message among the Children of Israel, yet many refused to believe despite such clear signs.
Isa's teaching centred on the worship of Allah alone and on keeping the Law revealed to Musa. He preached compassion, justice and love of one's neighbour. His message was addressed specifically to the people of Israel of his time, before the coming of the last prophet, Muhammad.
Muslims believe that Isa did not die on the cross but thatAllah raised him to Himself. This fundamental belief sets the Islamic view apart from the Christian one. Who is Isa in Islam?
Isa is Jesus, son of Maryam (Mary). Muslims recognise him as one of the greatest prophets and messengers of Allah, sent to the Children of Israel to confirm the Torah and to call people to worship Allah alone. The Quran calls him al-Masih (the Messiah) but rejects any notion of divinity or divine sonship regarding him.
How was Isa born according to the Quran?
The Quran teaches that Isa was born without a father, by the will of Allah alone, to the virgin Maryam. Surah Al-Imran (59) compares his creation to that of Adam: Allah said Be, and he was. From the cradle Isa spoke to defend his mother's honour, the first sign of his prophetic mission.
What miracles did Isa perform?
According to Surah Al-Imran (49), Isa healed the man born blind and the leper, raised the dead and shaped birds of clay that came to life, always by Allah's leave. He also asked Allah to send down a table spread with food from heaven. These miracles confirmed his message among the Children of Israel.
Did Jesus die on the cross according to Islam?
No. The Quran states in Surah An-Nisa (157-158) that Isa's enemies neither killed him nor crucified him, but that it was made to appear so to them. Allah raised him to Himself alive. This belief is one of the main differences between the Islamic and the Christian view of Jesus.
Will Isa return to earth?
Yes. According to a hadith reported by Al-Bukhari, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ announced that the son of Maryam will descend among mankind as a just judge. Muslims therefore believe in the return of Isa before the end of time, which is among the major signs of the Hour.
