The signs of the end of times in Islam: minor and major signs
🔵 Minor signs — 13 signs
The sending of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is itself the first sign that the Hour is near. The Prophet said: “I and the Hour have been sent like these two”, holding up his index and middle fingers together.
“I and the Hour have been sent like these two.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 6503
The death of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the year 11 of the Hijra is the second major sign fulfilled. His passing opened the door to all the other signs.
“Hasten to do good deeds before seven things come to pass.”
📚 Sahih Muslim no. 2947
The Prophet ﷺ foretold the conquest of Bayt Al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). It was accomplished under the caliphate of 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab in the year 16 of the Hijra (637 AD).
“Count six signs before the Hour: my death, then the conquest of Jerusalem...”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 3176
The Prophet ﷺ foretold a great epidemic after the conquest of Jerusalem. The plague of Amwas (639 AD) killed more than 25,000 Muslims, among them Abu 'Ubayda ibn Al-Jarrah.
“...then a mass death among you like the sheep struck down by disease.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 3176
The Prophet ﷺ foretold that a time would come when people would not know to whom to give their zakat, so great would the abundance be. Our own age, with the wealth of the oil countries, is a striking example.
“A time will come when a man will not know where to give his zakat, so wealthy will people be.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 1412
The Prophet ﷺ foretold the multiplying of wars, discord and disorder. Groups will fight one another and great massacres will take place. This sign is clearly being fulfilled.
“Two great groups with the same interests will kill one another, and the slaughter will be immense.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 7060
The Prophet ﷺ announced that earthquakes would multiply as the Hour drew near. Modern statistics confirm a marked rise in earthquakes of great magnitude.
“The Hour will not come until knowledge disappears, earthquakes multiply...”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 1036
The Prophet ﷺ said that time would seem to grow short: the year would be like a month, the month like a week, the week like a day. In our hyper-connected age, many feel this acceleration.
“The Hour will not come until time contracts: the year will be like a month, the month like a week...”
📚 Musnad Ahmad, graded authentic by Al-Albani
The Prophet ﷺ foretold that religious knowledge would decline and that ignorance would spread. The scholars would disappear and people would take the ignorant as their spiritual guides.
“Knowledge will be taken away, ignorance will settle in, alcohol will be drunk, fornication will spread.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 80
The angel Jibril questioned the Prophet ﷺ about the signs of the Hour. Among them: “You will see the barefoot, the destitute and the shepherds competing in raising tall buildings.” Dubai, Doha and Riyadh illustrate this prophecy perfectly.
“...and you will see the barefoot, the destitute, the shepherds of sheep competing in raising tall buildings.”
📚 Hadith Jibril — Sahih Muslim no. 8
The Prophet ﷺ foretold that some thirty false prophets would appear, each claiming to be a messenger of Allah. Musaylima Al-Kadhdhab, Al-Aswad Al-Ansi, and in our own time many sects, illustrate this sign.
“The Hour will not come until about thirty Dajjals (impostors) appear, each claiming to be a Messenger of Allah.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 3609
Allah revealed that the Romans (Byzantines), after their defeat, would defeat the Persians within a few years. This prophecy came true exactly as foretold, in 7 years. One of the scientific miracles of the Quran.
“This verse was revealed when the Persians had defeated the Romans; then the Romans defeated them exactly as foretold.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 4774 — Tirmidhi
A smoke will fill the earth and strike the believers like a head cold, while it will bring out the organs of the hypocrites. Some scholars hold it to be a major sign, others a minor sign already past. The majority class it among the major signs still to come.
“The smoke is among the signs — it will strike the believers like a head cold and will bring out the organs of the disbelievers.”
📚 Sahih Muslim — Ibn Mas'ud
🔴 Major signs — the 10 great signs
The Mahdi is a man from the lineage of the Prophet ﷺ (through Fatima). His name will be Muhammad ibn Abdullah. He will appear in Mecca, will be recognised by the believers despite his reluctance, and will rule with justice for 7 to 9 years. He will unite the Muslims and prepare for the coming of Issa عليه السلام.
“The Day of Judgement will not come until people are ruled by a man of my family whose name is like mine.”
📚 Sunan Abi Dawud no. 4282 — Sahih Ibn Hibban
The Dajjal is the greatest fitna of history. He will be blind in the right eye, and between his eyes will be the mark “Kafir”, readable by every believer. He will travel the earth in 40 days (1 day = 1 year, 1 day = 1 month, 1 day = 1 week, the other 37 = our normal days). He will be unable to enter either Mecca or Medina. He will finally be killed by Issa عليه السلام.
“There is no creation from Adam until the Hour greater in trial than the Dajjal.”
📚 Sahih Muslim no. 2946
Issa ibn Maryam عليه السلام will descend from heaven onto the white minaret of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, his hands resting on the wings of two angels. He will kill the Dajjal near Lod (Palestine), break the cross, kill the swine, apply the Islamic law and rule with justice. He will die and be buried in Medina.
“By the One who holds my soul in His hand, the son of Mary will descend among you as a just judge — he will break the cross, kill the swine...”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 3448
Ya'juj and Ma'juj are two immense peoples currently shut in behind a barrier built by Dhul-Qarnayn. They will come out after the descent of Issa عليه السلام and will ravage the earth, drinking every lake dry. They will all die at one stroke through a worm sent into their necks, by the decree of Allah.
“Ya'juj and Ma'juj open a breach every day until they see the light of the sun...”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 3346 — Sahih Muslim no. 2881
Three gigantic collapses of the earth will occur: one in the East, one in the West, and one in Arabia. Whole regions will be swallowed up. These disasters will mark the end of an age.
“The Hour will not come until there are three collapses of the earth: one in the East, one in the West, and one in Arabia.”
📚 Sahih Muslim no. 2901 — Sahih Al-Bukhari
One day the sun will rise in the West. After this sign, the door of repentance will close for good. No new faith and no repentance will be accepted. It is the point of no return in human history. Only those who already believed will find their faith of use.
“The Hour will not come until the sun rises in the West. When people see it, they will all believe — but that faith will no longer avail them.”
📚 Sahih Al-Bukhari no. 4359 — Sahih Muslim no. 157
A gigantic beast will come out of the earth, endowed with speech. It will address the people and will mark the believers with a shining sign and the disbelievers with a dark one. It will carry the staff of Musa عليه السلام and the ring of Sulayman عليه السلام. No one will be able to hide his faith or his disbelief.
“The Beast will come out and will mark the people — the believer will have a shining face and the disbeliever a dark face.”
📚 Sunan Abi Dawud no. 4322 — Tirmidhi
A fire will spring up from Yemen (or from the region of Aden) and will drive the people towards their place of gathering — Syria (Ash-Sham). This fire will be the last of the ten major signs. It will push mankind towards the place of the Final Judgement.
“...and a fire will spring up from the depths of Aden which will drive the people towards their place of gathering.”
📚 Sahih Muslim no. 2901
Before the total end of the world, a gentle wind will blow from the direction of Yemen. This wind will carry away the soul of every believer who has even the weight of a grain of faith in his heart. Only the disbelievers will remain alive to witness the final destruction.
“Allah will send a pleasant wind which will take the souls of all those who have faith in their hearts, and only the worst of people will remain.”
📚 Sahih Muslim no. 2940
Israfil عليه السلام will blow into the Trumpet (As-Sur). At the first blast, every living thing will die. At the second blast, all the dead will rise for the Judgement. It is the absolute end of this world and the beginning of the Hereafter.
“How could I be at ease when the Bearer of the Trumpet has already put it to his lips, straining his ears, waiting for the order to blow.”
📚 Sunan Tirmidhi no. 2431 — authentifié
The signs of the Hour in Islam — prophecies of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ announced dozens of signs preceding the Day of Judgement. These 23 signs are divided into minor signs (some already fulfilled or under way) and ten major signs (still to come). Among the minor signs fulfilled: the mission and the death of the Prophet, the conquest of Jerusalem, the plague of Amwas, the competition in building skyscrapers. Among those under way: the multiplying of wars and of earthquakes, and the disappearance of religious knowledge.
The ten major signs include: the appearance of Imam Mahdi and of the Dajjal (the Antichrist), the descent of Issa عليه السلام, the release of Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog), three great collapses of the earth (East, West, Arabian peninsula), the rising of the sun in the West, the coming out of the Beast (Ad-Dabbah), the fire of Yemen, the gentle wind carrying away the believers, and the blast of the Trumpet (As-Sur).

What are the major signs of the end of times in Islam?
The hadiths mention ten major signs preceding the Hour: the appearance of the Mahdi, the coming of the Dajjal, the descent of Issa (Jesus), the release of Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog), three great collapses of the earth (East, West, Arabia), the rising of the sun in the West, the coming out of the Beast, a fire from Yemen, a gentle wind carrying away the believers, then the blast of the Trumpet. Their exact order is debated among scholars.
Which minor signs of the Hour have already come to pass?
According to tradition, several minor signs have already occurred: the mission and then the death of the Prophet ﷺ, the conquest of Jerusalem under the caliphate of Umar, the plague of Amwas and the victory of the Byzantines over the Persians announced in the Quran. Others are held to be under way: the multiplying of strife and of earthquakes, the decline of religious knowledge, the appearance of false prophets and competition in raising tall buildings.
Who is the Dajjal?
The Dajjal, often translated as Antichrist, is described in the hadiths as the greatest trial of mankind. He will be one-eyed, will bear between his eyes the word « kafir », readable by every believer, and will claim divinity by producing wonders. According to the hadiths, he will be unable to enter either Mecca or Medina and will finally be killed by Issa after his descent. The Prophet ﷺ advised seeking refuge with Allah from his temptation.
Who is Imam Mahdi?
According to hadiths reported notably by Abu Dawud, the Mahdi is a man from the lineage of the Prophet ﷺ, bearing the same name as him, who will appear at the end of times to fill the earth with justice after it has been filled with injustice. Sunni tradition presents him as a pious leader who will unite the Muslims and will be a contemporary of the descent of Issa, without attributing any supernatural character to him.
What will happen when the sun rises in the West?
The rising of the sun in the West is one of the major signs reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim. According to these hadiths, when people see it they will all believe, but the door of repentance will then be closed: the faith of one who did not believe before will no longer benefit him. That is why the scholars see in it a pressing call to repent and to reform one's life before this sign comes.
