The Quran is made up of 114 surahs, each revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in particular circumstances. These sacred chapters fall into two broad categories according to where they were revealed: the Meccan surahs and the Medinan surahs.
The Meccan surahs were revealed in Mecca before the Hijra. They deal chiefly with the foundations of faith, the oneness of Allah and the resurrection. These texts often address the polytheists and set out the spiritual basis of Islam. The Medinan surahs, revealed after the Prophet's migration to Medina, deal more with legal, social and community matters.
Each surah has its own character. Their length varies greatly: Surah Al-Fatiha has only 7 verses while Al-Baqarah has 286. That range reflects the richness of the Quranic message and meets the spiritual needs of every moment of reading the Quran.
Memorising and reciting the surahs is a foundational practice for Muslims. Some surahs, such as Al-Fatiha, must be recited in every daily prayer. Others, shorter, are often learnt first by children and new Muslims.
Studying the 114 surahs closely shows how the revelation unfolded step by step. The themes touch every aspect of human life: spiritual life, morals, family relations, social justice. How many surahs does the Quran have?
The Quran has 114 surahs, of very different lengths. The longest is Al-Baqarah with 286 verses, while Al-Fatiha, which opens the Book, has only 7. The shortest is Al-Kawthar with 3 verses. Each surah is presented here with its Arabic name, its translation, its place of revelation, its number of verses and a detailed description.
What is the difference between a Meccan and a Medinan surah?
A Meccan surah was revealed before the Hijra: it stresses the oneness of Allah, the resurrection and the stories of the prophets, often addressing the polytheists. Which is the longest surah of the Quran?
The longest surah is Al-Baqarah (The Cow), the second in the Mushaf, with 286 verses. Medinan, it covers many subjects: faith, the laws of fasting, marriage and inheritance, and it holds the famous Verse of the Throne (Ayat al-Kursi, verse 255). Reading it is particularly recommended, notably to protect the home according to several authentic hadiths.

Which surah is recited in every prayer?
Al-Fatiha (The Opening) must be recited in every unit of prayer, according to the authentic hadith: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Al-Fatiha". After it, one usually reads another surah or a few verses. The short surahs at the end of the Quran are often learnt first by children and new Muslims, before moving on to fuller Quran memorisation.
