Discover the remarkable story of the Prophet Lut in Islam
Lut is among the major prophets of Islam, named several times in the Quran for his message and his patience with his people. His story teaches us precious lessons about faith and perseverance. Allah sent him to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, cities known for their sin and disobedience.
Lut's people committed forbidden acts and refused to heed his counsel. Despite his constant efforts, very few accepted his message. Their situation resembles that of other prophets of Islam who had to face rejection by their community.
The angels came to visit Lut in human form before the divine destruction of the two cities. The purpose of that visit was to warn him of the punishment at hand. The Quran tells how the people even threatened these visitors, showing just how far their moral corruption had gone.
Allah ordered Lut and his family to leave the city at once. His wife did not follow the divine instruction and met the same end as the people of the city. This story shows that close family cannot save someone who chooses disobedience.

Who is the Prophet Lut in Islam?
Lut (Lot in the Bible) is a prophet named several times in the Quran. A nephew of the prophet Ibrahim according to tradition, he was sent by Allah to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah to call them to give up their sins and worship Allah alone. His people rejected his message despite his repeated warnings.
What was the sin of Lut's people?
The Quran (Surah Al-A'raf, 80-81) relates that Lut's people committed an immorality no one had practised before them: the men satisfied their desires with men instead of women. They also preyed on travellers and refused all counsel, going so far as to threaten the prophet's guests.
What happened when the angels visited Lut?
Angels came to Lut in human form. His people rushed to attack them, and Lut, fearing for his guests, looked in vain for one reasonable man among them. The angels then revealed who they were and ordered him to leave the city by night with his family, without looking back (Surah Hud, 77-81).
Why was Lut's wife punished?
The Quran states that Lut's wife was excluded from the deliverance of his family because she had taken the side of the sinners. She met the same end as the people of the city. Her story shows that family ties, even with a prophet, do not save one who chooses to disobey Allah.
How were Lut's people destroyed?
According to Surah Hud (82-83), when the command of Allah came, the city was turned upside down and a rain of stones of baked clay fell upon it. The Quran adds that Allah left of that city a clear sign for people who reflect (Surah Al-Ankabut, 35).
