Yahya, also known as John the Baptist in the Christian tradition, holds a particular place among the prophets of Islam. His story, told in the Quran and the hadiths, reveals a man of exceptional piety and early wisdom.
Son of Zakariya, Yahya was born of a divine miracle. His parents were old and his mother barren, but Allah answered his father's prayers. From his earliest years, Yahya showed a remarkable devotion to his Creator. The Quran states that he was given wisdom while still a child.
Yahya's mission was above all to prepare the coming of Isa ibn Maryam. He preached repentance and called people to turn to Allah. His life was marked by asceticism and simplicity. He often fasted and spent long hours in prayer out in the wild.
The Islamic texts underline his spiritual purity and his detachment from worldly goods. Yahya never sinned, which makes him one of the most revered of the prophets. His compassion for Allah's creatures was legendary, to the point that he wept out of pity for every living being.
His life ended tragically with his martyrdom at the hands of an unjust king. That end bears witness to his courage before oppression and his refusal to compromise his principles. Who is Yahya in Islam?
Yahya is the prophet known as John the Baptist in the Christian tradition. Son of the prophet Zakariya, he was born by a miracle when his parents were old and his mother barren. The Quran describes him as a leader, chaste, a prophet among the righteous (Surah Al-Imran, 39).
Why is the birth of Yahya a miracle?
Zakariya, in great old age, begged Allah for an heir although his wife was barren. The angels brought him news of the birth of Yahya, noting that Allah had never given that name to anyone before (Surah Maryam, 7). That birth shows that the power of Allah goes beyond the laws of nature.
What are Yahya's qualities according to the Quran?
Surah Maryam (12-14) relates that Allah gave Yahya wisdom while still a child, along with tenderness and purity. He was devout, dutiful towards his parents, neither harsh nor disobedient. Allah commanded him to hold fast to the Book, and the Quran sends peace upon him on the day he was born, the day he died and the day he will be raised.
What links Yahya and Isa?
Yahya and Isa (Jesus) were contemporaries. The Quran says that Yahya came confirming a Word from Allah, which the scholars understand to mean Isa. His mission was to prepare the coming of Isa by calling the Children of Israel to repentance and to the worship of Allah alone.
How did the Prophet Yahya die?
According to the accounts passed on by Muslim scholars, Yahya died a martyr, put to death on the order of an unjust king whose act, contrary to the divine Law, he had refused to endorse. The Quran does not describe his death, but his courage before oppression and his refusal to compromise remain an example for believers.
