Which dua should I recite during the last 10 nights of Ramadan?
The most recommended dua is Allahumma innaka Afuwwun, tuhibbul afwa, fa'fu anni: "O Allah, You are the One who pardons, You love to pardon, so pardon me". This is the supplication the Prophet ﷺ taught Aisha when she asked him what to say if she recognised Laylat al-Qadr. What does Allahumma innaka Afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa'fu anni mean?
Allahumma means "O Allah"; innaka Afuwwun, "You are the One who effaces faults" (Al-Afuww is one of the names of Allah); tuhibbul afwa, "You love to pardon"; and fa'fu anni, "so pardon me". This short supplication asks for the complete effacement of sins, which is especially sought on the Night of Decree, described in the Quran as better than a thousand months.
When is Laylat al-Qadr?
Laylat al-Qadr falls in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and most likely on one of the odd nights (21, 23, 25, 27 or 29), according to the authentic hadiths. Many scholars favour the 27th night, but nothing is certain: that is why it is advised to increase one's worship on every night of that period, as the Prophet ﷺ did.
Is this dua authentic?
Yes. It is reported in particular by At-Tirmidhi (hadith no. 3513) from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and graded sahih (authentic) by the hadith specialists. It also appears in other collections, such as that of Ibn Majah. You can therefore recite it with confidence, preferably in Arabic, understanding its meaning through the translation given.
What else should I do during the last 10 nights of Ramadan?
The Prophet ﷺ redoubled his efforts on these nights: he stayed awake in prayer, woke his family and kept the spiritual retreat (i'tikaf) in the mosque.
