Ramadan of the year 1448 AH begins, according to astronomical calculation, on Monday 8 February 2027.
The Ramadan 2027 calendar
| Event | Expected date (astronomical calculation) |
|---|---|
| Night of doubt and first tarawih prayer | Sunday 7 February 2027, in the evening |
| First day of fasting (1 Ramadan 1448) | Monday 8 February 2027 |
| Start of the last ten nights | Saturday 27 February 2027, in the evening |
| 27th night (likely Laylat al-Qadr) | Friday 5 March 2027, in the evening |
| Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal 1448) | Tuesday 9 March 2027 |
Dates are based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. In France, the start date is announced the day before, on the “night of doubt”, by the Muslim authorities; it may differ by one day. See the Hijri calendar for the other months of the year.
Why the date of Ramadan changes every year
The Hijri calendar is lunar: a year has about 354 days, which is 11 days fewer than the solar year. Ramadan therefore moves forward by about 11 days each year. In 2026, it began around 18 February; in 2027, it begins around 8 February; in 2028, it will begin in late January.

Ramadan in the Quran
Allah says: “The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed as guidance for the people, and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever of you is present in this month, let him fast it.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and hoping for Allah’s reward, his previous sins will be forgiven” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 38; Sahih Muslim, 760).

You may be wondering…
When does Ramadan 2027 start?
According to astronomical calculation (Umm al-Qura calendar), 1 Ramadan 1448 falls on Monday 8 February 2027: the first day of fasting would therefore be Monday, and the first tarawih prayer on the evening of Sunday 7 February. The official date depends on the sighting of the crescent moon and may vary by one day depending on the country and the religious authorities.
What is the date of Eid al-Fitr 2027?
If the month has 29 days, as astronomical calculation predicts, Eid al-Fitr falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027. It may be moved to Wednesday 10 March if the crescent of Shawwal is not sighted.
When is the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr) in 2027?
Laylat al-Qadr is sought in the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days. In 2027, the 27th night would begin at sunset on Friday 5 March 2027, subject to the actual start date of the month. Recite the dua of the last 10 nights.
How long is the fast in 2027?
In February and March, the days are short in Europe: in France, the fast lasts about 12 hours, from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib). The exact times for your city are given in our prayer times.
Who is exempt from fasting?
The Quran exempts the sick and the traveller, who make up for the missed days later (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:184-185). Women during their period or postnatal bleeding do not fast and make up the days afterwards. The elderly or the chronically ill who cannot fast feed one poor person per day (fidya).
