The story of Ibrahim and Isma‘il

Ibrahim saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his son. Isma‘il replied: “O my father, do as you are commanded: you will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient” (Surah As-Saffat, 37:102). At the moment of carrying it out, Allah ransomed him with “a great sacrifice” (37:107). Read the story of the prophet Ibrahim and that of Isma‘il.

The rules for the one who intends to sacrifice

From the start of Dhul-Hijjah, whoever intends to sacrifice does not cut their hair or nails until the sacrifice (Sahih Muslim, 1977). The sacrifice is made with a well-sharpened knife, without making the animal suffer or slaughtering it in front of another. For the pilgrimage, see the Hajj guide.

Frequently asked questions

You may be wondering…

Is the sacrifice obligatory?

For most scholars, it is a strongly recommended sunnah for those who can afford it; the Hanafi school considers it obligatory (wajib) for those who can afford it. The sacrifice may be offered from the day of Eid after the prayer until sunset on 13 Dhul-Hijjah.

Which animal can be sacrificed?

A sheep (at least 6 months according to several views), a goat (1 year), a cow (2 years) or a camel (5 years), without visible defects. A cow or camel may be shared between seven people (Sahih Muslim, 1318).

It is recommended to eat some, give some as gifts and give some to the poor. Many scholars advise dividing it into three thirds: family, relatives and neighbours, the poor. Selling any part of it or paying the butcher with it is forbidden.
