Eid al-Fitr 2027: date, Eid prayer and sunnahs of the day
Eid al-Fitr, the “festival of breaking the fast”, marks the end of the Ramadan fast. It falls on the 1st day of the month of Shawwal.

The date of Eid al-Fitr
| Year | Expected date |
|---|---|
| 2027 (1448) | Tuesday 9 March 2027 (or Wednesday 10 March) |
| 2028 (1449) | Around 26 or 27 February 2028 |
Calculated dates; the official date is announced the evening before, after sighting the crescent of Shawwal.
The Eid prayer step by step
- It takes place in the morning, about a quarter of an hour after sunrise, preferably in the open air or at the mosque.
- First rak‘ah: opening takbir, then 6 extra takbirs (7 in total), Al-Fatiha and a surah (often Al-A‘la).
- Second rak‘ah: on standing up, 5 takbirs, then Al-Fatiha and a surah (often Al-Ghashiyah).
- After the salam, listen to the imam’s sermon.
To review the basic movements, see how to pray.
The sunnahs of the day of Eid
- Take a full bath (ghusl) and wear your best clothes.
- Eat an odd number of dates before going out (Sahih al-Bukhari, 953).
- Repeat the takbir on the way: “Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah…”.
- Take one route going and another coming back (Sahih al-Bukhari, 986).
- Visit family, make peace with others and give gifts to children.

After Eid: the six days of Shawwal
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the whole year” (Sahih Muslim, 1164). They may be fasted consecutively or separately, from 2 Shawwal. The other great festival is Eid al-Adha.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?
According to astronomical calculation, Eid al-Fitr 1448 falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027, or Wednesday 10 March if Ramadan has 30 days. The final date depends on sighting the crescent moon the evening before. See our Ramadan 2027 page.
How is the Eid prayer performed?
It has two units (rak‘ahs), without adhan or iqamah. One says 7 takbirs at the start of the first rak‘ah and 5 at the start of the second (the most common view), then the imam gives a sermon (khutbah) after the prayer.
When should zakat al-fitr be paid?
It must be paid before the Eid prayer, and may be given one or two days earlier. Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ ordered it to be paid before people went out to the prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1509). See the zakat page.
What do we say on the day of Eid?
The Companions used to say to each other: Taqabbala Allahu minna wa minkum, “May Allah accept from us and from you”. People also commonly say Eid Mubarak, “Blessed Eid”.
