Learn the Arabic numerals — table, examples and interactive quiz
The Eastern Arabic numerals (٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩) are used across the Arabic-speaking world and appear in Arabic editions of the Quran. Unlike Arabic script (right to left), the numerals are read left to right, exactly like Western numerals. Knowing them is essential for reading surah and verse numbers and Islamic dates.
The interactive quiz offers 3 levels drawn from the Muslim Alim app: level 1 beginner (digits 0 to 9), level 2 intermediate (numbers 10 to 99), level 3 advanced (numbers 100 to 999). Each session generates 10 random questions with no repeats and 4 possible answers. The score appears in real time with immediate feedback on each answer.

What are the Arabic numerals from 0 to 9?
The Eastern Arabic numerals are written ٠ ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥ ٦ ٧ ٨ ٩ and pronounced sifr (0), wahid (1), ithnan (2), thalatha (3), arba'a (4), khamsa (5), sitta (6), sab'a (7), thamaniya (8) and tis'a (9). They are used in Arabic-speaking countries and in Arabic editions of the Quran.
Are Arabic numerals read from right to left?
No. Unlike Arabic script, which runs right to left, numbers are read left to right, exactly like Western numerals. So ١٤٤٦ reads 1446 and ١١٤ reads 114. This is what most confuses beginners: once it is grasped, reading surah numbers, verse numbers and dates becomes quick and natural.
Why learn Arabic numerals as a Muslim?
Knowing the Arabic numerals lets you find your way in an Arabic Quran: surah numbers (Al-Fatiha = ١) and verse numbers are written with them. They also serve for reading Hijri dates, for instance the year ١٤٤٦. It is a small thing to learn and very useful for Quran memorisation and for reading religious texts.
How does the Arabic numerals quiz work?
The quiz has three levels: beginner (digits 0 to 9), intermediate (numbers 10 to 99) and advanced (numbers 100 to 999). Each round has 10 random questions with no repeats and 4 possible answers. The score appears in real time and each answer gets immediate feedback, so you can progress at your own pace and play again as often as you like.
How are 100 and 1000 written in Arabic numerals?
The number 100 is written ١٠٠ and 1000 is written ١٠٠٠. The principle is the same as with Western numerals: the digits are placed side by side, left to right. A few useful examples: 114 (the number of surahs) = ١١٤, 365 = ٣٦٥, 999 = ٩٩٩ and 6236 (the number of verses of the Quran) = ٦٢٣٦.
